Chapter 19

Such a comforting Sunday night rain, Miriam thought, staring out the kitchen window at the silver drops slanting across the window. The dinner and dishes were done, and the long list of wedding chores would begin tomorrow morning. For now, she had a moment to linger and enjoy the wriggling silver drops on the glass. Gott willing, the rain would help pack down the gravel and dust, water the grasses and trees, and prepare the property for Wednesday’s wedding crowd. Nothing brought a fresh, clean scent to the farm like a crisp fall rain.

Tomorrow, the real challenges would begin with the arrival of the wedding trailer and the team of cooks. The men would erect a tent and set up porta-potties, and areas would be designated for guest horses and buggy parking. Oh, and the signs? Miriam needed to make sure they set up signs directing folks, gifts, and horses to the proper areas. With hundreds of guests attending, they would need some direction.

Behind her, on the other side of the kitchen, Lizzie sat reading a storybook to Sarah Grace, who must have been too tired to fidget as she sat with her chin resting on the table. Mem sat in the padded chair near them, her fingers moving deftly as she guided the needle in and out, in and out. The sampler was taking shape beautifully, and the project seemed to have given Mem a boost in energy.

The incident with Lois stranded in the buggy had been an eye-opener for Miriam. It seemed as if overnight the small but mighty mother who had raised her with a stern gaze and high expectations had shrunk to a softer, oft-confused old woman. Although Miriam knew this was Gott’s plan, the natural progression of aging and growing old, she was struggling to accept the changes. Change could be so difficult! Despite her mother’s occasional and tender childlike moments, Miriam felt a sickening guilt lacing through her. Over what? She wasn’t sure.

As Miriam gazed out the window, she saw a floating light from the distance, coming from the Dawdi House. A lantern. Someone was coming.

She placed the kitchen towel on its rack and went to the mudroom, where the rain tapped out a steady beat on the thin roof. Stepping out, she saw Essie running through the rain, hugging something to her chest. “Essie? Come in, come in,” she called, ushering her daughter into the outer room.

“I was trying to run ahead of the rain,” Essie said, giving her head a shake and wiping her feet on the concrete floor.

“Do you want a cup of tea?” Miriam offered, entering the kitchen.

“Nay, denki.” Essie crossed to the table and plopped down into a chair while holding on to her bundle. “I’m afraid I have a problem.”

Miriam put the kettle down and snapped to attention. “Lizzie, take Sarah Rose upstairs. You can finish reading her book up in your room, then get ready for bed.”

“Yes, Mem.” Lizzie’s eyes were round with curiosity, but she resisted and took her sister upstairs.
